What should I expect for my first visit?

  • First, Jacklynn will go over all oFrom there, she'll observe a feeding session and work with you hands-on to address positioning, latch, milk transfer, or whatever is at the top of your list.

There's no need to prepare anything specific, other than bringing your baby, any bottles or pumping equipment you're currently using, and your questions (we highly recommend writing these down throughout the days leading up to your visit!). We mean it when we say no question is too small. Following your evaluation, we’ll create an individualized plan to help you move towards your goal(s).

    Some More Details:

A first visit is 90 minutes and will include:

    • an overview of your and your baby’s medical history

    • labor and birth experience

    • feeding history

    • your goals and any challenges that you or baby have been experiencing

    • a complete full body assessment to include body posture, movement patterns, body symmetry, oral anatomy and oral motor function

If breastfeeding, a functional feeding assessment is completed to include:

    • positioning

    • latch

    • infant suck/swallow/breathe coordination

    • pre- and post-feed weights using our professional infant scale

    • maternal breast assessment and pump fitting/ flange sizing may also be assessed as needed

We will then discuss any recommendations for any changes in feeding or pumping routines and  supplementation needs.

If you are bottle feeding, we will assess and make recommendations and modifications as needed for:

    • bottle/nipple flow rate

    • feeding positioning

    • infant suck/swallow/breathe coordination and make modifications as needed

We will discuss recommendations for changes in flow rate, feeding style, and volumes needed for weight gain and growth.

  • Your first OT visit will begin with a comprehensive evaluation. Jacklynn will review your baby's history and any relevant medical records, observe your baby's movement, posture, and feeding, and discuss her findings with you before putting together a plan. Depending on your insurance plan, you may need a prescription from your baby's primary care provider before this visit takes place.

  • If you've requested an in-home visit, Jacklynn will come to you. Please have a comfortable space available where you can sit and nurse or bottle-feed your baby. Everything else she needs she'll bring with her.

  • A therapeutic ultrasound visit starts with an overview of current concerns for mastitis or clogged ducts. We will then discuss, feeding/ pumping history, interventions trialed at home to treat clogs or inflammation, and also complete a physical assessment of breast tissue to assess location of clogs, and rule out any contraindications for therapeutic ultrasound.

Prior to therapeutic ultrasound and depending on your needs and comfort level, we may also complete lymphatic breast massage to reduce inflammation to help achieve the best results possible.

Following therapeutic ultrasound, we will discuss home routines to help continue the reduction of inflammation for further resolution and prevention of clogged ducts and/or mastitis.
